  16. <p>De Klerk investigates a rash of apparent assassinations
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    One late afternoon eight years ago, Griffiths Mxenge, a
  19. well-known black lawyer and antiapartheid campaigner in the
  20. city of Durban, was driving home when he stopped to help four
  21. men whose pickup truck had apparently broken down. According to
  22. an affidavit given to the police, the men abducted Mxenge, drove
  23. him to a field outside a nearby soccer stadium, stabbed him
  24. repeatedly and then left him to die in a pool of blood.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>    Since 1977 nearly 50 government opponents have been
  27. murdered under murky circumstances, the victims of apparent
  28. assassinations. Few of their killers have been identified, let
  29. alone apprehended by the authorities. Last week long-standing
  30. suspicions that police hit squads were behind at least some of
  31. the murders were bolstered by State President F.W. de Klerk's
  32. decision to order an inquiry. He announced that the Ministry of
  33. Law and Order and the Ministry of Justice would conduct a fresh
  34. investigation into the allegedly political murders of Mxenge and
  35. 79 other victims, whose names were on a list that De Klerk gave
  36. to his Justice Minister.

  38. <p>    The government had been under growing pressure to take
  39. action since the hit-squad affair burst onto the front pages of
  40. the country's newspapers in October. At that time a prisoner on
  41. death row, former policeman Butana Almond Nofomela, alleged that
  42. he had been part of a team that "eliminated" Mxenge in 1981.
  43. After being named in Nofomela's affidavit, former police captain
  44. Dirk Coetzee went public in the weekly newspaper Vrye Weekblad
  45. with a story of how he headed a police hit squad between 1980
  46. and 1982 that carried out at least nine assassinations,
  47. including that of Mxenge, as well as numerous bombings and
  48. abductions. "I was in the heart of the whore," declared Coetzee,
  49. who accused senior police officers of authorizing
  50. assassinations.
  51. </p>
  52. <p>    In launching the new probe, officials said they would
  53. prosecute Nofomela for his role in Mxenge's murder. They also
  54. planned to issue a warrant for Coetzee's arrest. But tracking
  55. him down is proving to be difficult. Coetzee, who apparently
  56. made his confession out of fear that his former superiors would
  57. try to make him a scapegoat, fled the country last month, and
  58. has been variously reported living in Europe, elsewhere in
  59. Africa and on the island of Mauritius.
